Abstract
Este artículo busca examinar las condiciones en las que construyen su masculinidad varones jóvenes que se dedican a las labores de vigilancia y seguridad para los cárteles del narcotráfico, conocidos como «halcones». Analiza la experiencia etnográfica recabada en dos espacios: la Ciudad de Mante, Tamaulipas, y el penal de Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. Se muestran las formas de reclutamiento, operación y funciones de estos jóvenes y el significado que tiene para sus identidades de género el trabajo con las mafias. Asimismo, se realiza una reflexión sobre la etnografía en contextos de violencia y se propone que herramientas como la ciberetnografía y los sitios web especializados en el tema y sus foros de discusión, son una fuente directa de información con individuos fuera de la ley.
