Abstract
While numerous standards and guidelines to assist in the improvement of emergency medical services have been developed in the past six years, ambulance services lagged other health services in training and proficlency of personnel. Through the aid of a task force of the AMA Commission on Emergency Health Services and existing ambulance, rescue and public safety organizations, the Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians was formed in 1970. A free standing, nationally organized body, its purpose is to foster training and education of emergency medical technicians, to set and maintain standards for their training examinations leading to certification and national registration of these health care personnel.
