Abstract

Nowadays final disposal systems of urban solid waste must be operated in a way that optimizes the biochemical degradation processes inside those systems. As a result of that, and because it is directly linked to landfill waste, leachate treatment must be seen as part of the final deposition system of domestic solid waste. Urban solid waste from the city of Portao, RS, has been used in the study. Foundry used sand (green sand from molding process of the cast iron production) was used as intermediate covering layer of the landfill. Other two materials were also tested: local soil of the city of Portao, and construction waste, in order to evaluate which one would have better performance as intermediate and final layer cover. The results have indicated that construction waste is the most appropriate to be used as intermediate layer. On the other hand, soil and used sand have presented more potential to be used as final covering layer.
