Abstract
Protein systems do not live in a vacuum, but participate in dynamic feedback with their surrounding solvent environment. Coating the surface of every macromolecule and assembly, one finds several layers of hydration water. These water molecules, which move typically between 3× and 10× slower than water molecules in bulk water, stabilize the structure and function of macromolecules in ways not yet fully described.
