Abstract

Abstract In Chapter 2, we documented the pressures on today’s working parents as they attempt to balance the potentially competing demands of employment and child rearing. We found that many, but not all, working parents experience substantial amounts of personal stress in balancing their work and family responsibilities, and that conflict between job and family can affect a parent’s physical and psychological well-being. Incompatible family and work responsibilities can also contribute to work-place impacts such as excessive absenteeism, unscheduled time off, telephone calls home, lost concentration, and reduced productivity.
