Abstract

Jacobsen, C.H. (2003). Empirical studies of parallel processes—review and criticism. Nordisk Psykologi, 55, 177–196. Parallel processes in psychotherapy and supervision refer to the phenomenon, that relations and interactions from one setting are recreated in the other. Though being an important concept in the psychodynamic theory of psychotherapy supervision, only a few empirical studies have been conducted. After giving a short presentation of the field, these empirical studies and their findings are reviewed. The existence of parallel process is found in five out of six studies. Some critical remarks on the studies' designs and methodology are made. The paper finally proposes some guidelines for further investigation in the field of parallel process. In a time where evidence-based medicine is a key word, this article can be seen as giving a modest contribution to a central concept in the field of psychotherapy supervision.
