Abstract

The absolute cross section for the emission of the first negative bands of O + 2 under electron impact on oxygen has been measured using photon-counting techniques. The measured cross sections are free from polarization effects. At 100 eV electron energy, the emission cross sections for the (0, 0), (1, 0) and (2, 0) bands were found to be 2.4 x 10 -18 cm 2, 3.67 x 10 -18 cm 2 and 1.37 x 10 -18 cm 2, respectively. The emission cross- section ratios are in reasonable agreement with the proton impact-excitation measurement.
