Abstract

Although the Si metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) may be physically scaled to the atomic scale [1], Dr. Landauer has predicted an information processing limit based on Von Neumann's ideas [2]. Dr. Landauer anticipated that the stable operation of atomic???scale devices becomes impossible at room temperature when the supply voltage is lower than the thermal voltage, which is a substantial restriction created by the environment. This may induce some pessimism as regards the future of the Si???MOSFET???based electronics industry, but such concerns are unwarranted because conventional physical scaling approach is not the only doctrine available to us [3]. One interesting alternative is the new instructive guide of ???advancing device architectures by aiming at the targets desired.??? ???Technical singularity??? is an important keyword for a new business opportunity. This is an unconventional proposal because it differs from the conventional approach of the ???application???specific integrated circuit.???
