Abstract

CSF examination is a useful investigation in the diagnosis, monitoring and prognostication of several neuroimmunological diseases. Traditionally, several biomarkers used in the diagnostic immunopathology laboratory, e.g., the presence of oligoclonal bands by isoelectric focusing, have been included in the diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis. Lately, with the emergence of various autoimmune encephalitides, and the growing awareness that not all biomarkers of systemic disease are present in peripheral blood, there has been an active search for clinically useful analytes in the CSF.
