Abstract

We discuss the existence of two normal waves in an isotropic medium when the latter is optically pumped by an inducing field of arbitrary elliptic state of polarization. The condition is given for which the normal waves will have orthogonal states of polarization and the corresponding relation between the ellipticities of the normal waves and the inducing field is derived. Several examples are given to illustrate the relevance of the results in nonlinear polarization spectroscopy.
