Abstract

A minimum flash-point solution is one that is more hazardous in terms of explosion potential than each of its components individually. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate methods of hazard reduction for binary solutions through addition of a specified third component. The mole fraction of the third component necessary to eliminate the minimum flash-point behavior and the minimum flash-point value for its disappearance are two key parameters of this hazard reduction, with equations to determine these proposed herein. These associated equations, derived from the flash-point-prediction model proposed previously, are verified by comparison of the estimated values of the two parameters with the corresponding experimental data. The results reveal that the proposed equations may be successfully applied to estimate both the value of the necessary mole fraction of this third component and the minimum value of the associated flash point.
