Abstract
AbstractTwo important classes of experiments aimed at the energetics, kinetics and the mechanism of unimolecular reactions of molecular ions are discussed. The first kind of experiment is based on a thermal sample of molecules. As an example the energetically lowest reaction channel in the ethane ion, i.e. the H2 loss reaction, is presented. The second kind of experiment deals with state‐selected ions. Here as an example the photodissociation of HBr* ions is discussed.
