Abstract

In thin layers of single crystal barium titanate, domains with a width down to 200 Å were found. The same domain configurations as in bulk material was observed within a thickness range of the film from 1000 to 3000 Å. The thickness D of the domain walls is a function of the external electric field. The value of D was measured as D ⩽ 100 Å. With a special device to produce electric fields within the object stage of the Elmiskop I the polarization reversal was observed.
