Abstract

The electronic structure of the valence and conduction bands of CrSe, Cr 5Se 6 and Cr 5S 6 has been investigated by means of photoemission and inverse-photoemission spectroscopies. The structures just below and above the Fermi level ( E F) have been attributed to the occupied and unoccupied Cr 3d states with t 2g symmetry in comparison to the results of band-structure calculation. The Cr 3d exchange splitting energies are almost unchanged with a value of 3 eV. We have also investigated the Cr 3d states in the valence bands of the three compounds by means of Cr 3p-3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The Cr 3d spectrum is composed of a main peak near E F and a broad structure around 4 eV below E F.
