Abstract

The time dependence of a transient grating (TG) signal after photoexcitation of a photochemically stable molecule to an excited singlet state is presented including the decay from the excited singlet state as well as from the excited triplet state. By analyzing the time dependence, the absolute quantum yields of fluorescence and the triplet formation, the decay rates of the excited singlet and triplet states can be determined at once. The time dependence of the TG signal after the excitation of naphthalene is studied to confirm the validity of the present method.
