Abstract
As part of a fundamental study on structure and properties of carbon films obtained by reduction of graphite oxide, prepared from natural graphite powder by Staudenmaier's method, an ESR measurement was carried out for the graphitized carbon film heat treated up to 2800°C.A single broad line with about 10 gauss peak-to-peak line width, was observed when the plane of the film was parallel to the magnetic field. The absorption line, being symmetrical and approximately Lorentzian in shape, becomes broader both when an angle between the plane of film and the magnetic field increases and when the temperature is lowered. As a result of the temperature dependence of the absorption intensity estimated by integrating graphically, it is reasonably concluded that no localized spin center presents in the graphitized carbon film. The three dimensional diffraction line (112) was observed in an X-ray diffraction study. Therefore, the g-value anisotropy seems to be found in the graphitized carbon film.
