Abstract

Electron spin resonance and optical absorption spectra of Fe 3+ ions in K 2SO 4ZnSO 4 glasses have been studied. Three resonance lines are observed near g = 2.0, g = 4.3 and g = 6.5. The resonance line at g = 4.3 is attributed to Fe 3+ ions in a rhombic crystal field. The resonance at g = 6.5 is due to Fe 3+ ions in axially distorted sites and the resonance at g = 2.0 is due to both the axiality of the crystal field and spin-spin interaction. The optical absorption spectrum shows six bands characteristics of Fe 3+ ions in octahedral symmetry. The crystal field ( Dq) and the Racah parameters ( B and C) have been evaluated.
