Abstract

Electron spin resonance and optical absorption spectra of Mn2+ ion doped in Na2SO4-ZnSO4 glass have been made. Remarkable changes have been observed in the ESR spectrum when the concentration of the Mn2+ ion was changed and also when the temperature was varied. The optical absorption spectrum at room temperature showed six bands characteristic of Mn2+ ion in octahedral symmetry. The crystal field (Dq) and the Racah parameters (B and C) have been evaluated. It is concluded from these studies that zinc is substituted by manganese and the site symmetry around the transition metal ion is octahedral.
