Abstract
Electron loss spectroscopy (ELS) data for the room temperature interaction of water vapor with Al(lll) and Al(lOO) are reported. At greater exposures, both Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and ELS data exhibit changes in spectral features indicative of oxygen incorporation into the near-surface region. Differences in reactivity between the (111) and (100) surfaces are observed. The two H 2O adsorption stages on these surfaces cannot be distinguished in the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) data. Oxidized Al shows only one prominent ELS feature, at loss energy 20.8 eV. This loss is assigned to an electronic transition from 02 p to the maximum in the density of states of the conduction band of Al 2O 3. The transition from dissociative chemisorption to oxidation of aluminum is clearly seen in the ELS and AES data.
