Abstract

A unit is described which allows “metastable defocusing” and the measurement of Ion Kinetic Energy spectra for negative ions using a Hitachi Perkin—Elmer RMU 7D mass spectrometer. Examples of the use of these techniques are discussed including the observation of two- and three-step degradation sequences of metastable ions, and a study of collision induced dissociations as a function of collision gas pressure.
