Abstract

PEKAREK'S theory of the wave of stratification1 has recently been extended to cover self-excited moving striations2. This theory, which assumes a Maxwellian energy distribution, implies that an essential characteristic of moving striations is a phase shift between the maxima in the variation of the electron density and electron temperature. Time-resolved Langmuir probe and microwave measurements2,3 seem to verify the theory.
