Abstract
Self-consistent electron energy bands for paramagnetic chromium have been projected into the two-dimensional Brillouin zone to investigate the possibility of localized states on the (001) surface. Several gaps occur, including some at the bulk Fermi energy, suggesting surface states. Analysis with Mattis' conditions for surface states supports this conclusion. The potential produced by the self-consistent electron charge density was used to generate a positron band structure which was also projected into the (001) Brillouin zone. Suitable conditions for surface states were again found, but the apparent negative work function for positrons in chromium complicates their experimental observation.
