Abstract

The data on electron and ion heating in supercritical quasiperpendicular shocks obtained abcard the ‘Prognoz-10-Intercosmos’ satellite are reviewed. It is shown that both ion and electron heating takes place in the ramp. The latter is explained by the development of strong instability of counter-streaming ions (reflected and transmitted ones). The kinetic cross-field streaming instability possibly contributes the electron heating also.
