Abstract

Rate constants for electron or energy transfer quenching reactions of ∗[Eu ⊂ 2.2.1] 3+, ∗Eu 3+ aq, ∗[Tb ⊂ 2.2.1] 3+ and ∗Tb 3+ aq by some cyanide complexes have been measured in aqueous solutions from Stern-Volmer quenching plots of luminescence lifetime data. The effect of encapsulation of Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ in the 2.2.1 cryptand on the rate constants of the bimolecular quenching processes is examined. Energy transfer quenching occurs much faster for the free ions than for the cryptates, while the rate constants for electron transfer quenching are practically the same for cryptate and aquo ions.
