Abstract

We discuss the influence of electric fields on the macroscopic dynamics of chiral smectic liquid crystals valid on length scales smaller than the pitch. The experiment by Pieranski, Guyon and Keller is interpreted in the framework of the approach presented. The relationship to the macroscopic dynamics valid for length scales larger than the pitch is pointed out and other approaches to electromechanic effects are critically examined.
