Abstract

The propagation of electromagnetic plane waves in anisotropic media is analyzed when permittivity and permeability tensors are simultaneously diagonalizable with components εj, μj, j=1,2,3, being positive or negative according to whether the material is right or left handed. The behavior of transverse electric, transverse magnetic (TE, TM) fields in biaxial media is carefully analyzed. In uniaxial materials with ε1=ε2, μ1=μ2, analytical expressions are obtained for the components of two harmonic plane waves propagating with different refractive indexes. These results are used to discuss the reflection of a harmonic plane wave, impinging from an isotropic medium on the plane boundary of biaxial and uniaxial anisotropic half space material. In each case, the two possibilities—right- and left-handed materials—are discussed in parallel. The main novelty of this work lies in the definition of left-handed anisotropic media.
