Abstract

We take “spacetime” R × R 2 × S 1 as a simple example of non-minkowskian spacetime and calculate the electromagnetic self-energies of massive and massless charged fields with spin 0, 1 2 , and 1 to second order in perturbation theory. It is found that massless scalar and vector fields acquire a gauge-dependent mass and the mass renormalization of massive scalar and vector fields are gauge-dependent, while a massless spinor field does not acquire a mass and the mass renomalization of a massive spinor field is gauge independent.
