Abstract

The electromagnetic mass differences of p, n and Δ ++, Δ +, Δ 0, Δ − are evaluated in the Skyrme model. In order to explain the observed proton-neutron mass difference, a new term which corresponds to the down-up quark mass difference has to be introduced. With M p = M n as an input which requires m d− m u = 2 MeV, we predict the mass differences M Δ ++ − M Δ + , M Δ + − M Δ 0 and M Δ 0 − M Δ − .
