Abstract

Electromagnetic forces especially on electrically polarized and magnetized materials are investigated on a macroscopic scale. These investigations are closely connected to the almost 80-yr old Abraham-Minkowski controversy about the “correct” form of Maxwell's stress tensor and Poynting's vector in the presence of electric polarization and magnetization. The decomposition of the total force on an electromagnetic body into an electromagnetic and a mechanical part will suggest a certain answer to this controversy. This answer can be regarded as a specification of the more general resolution of the Abraham-Minkowski controversy given by Kranys̆ [1, 2] and Maugin [3].
