Abstract

Germanischer Lloyd, one of nine internationally recognized Ship Classification Societies, is at present participating in a project aimed at the “Development of a New Technique for Ship Operation”. The objective of the project is to raise the technological level of the ship as a transportation system, with the aid of todays' scientific and technological potential. This means that the construction of seagoing ships of all kinds is intended to result in more economical ships by using–a high degree of automation–a high standard of safety–a high degree of reliability–optimum utilization of primary energy for propulsion and operation systems.
