Abstract

An electrochemical strategy for the synthesis of 3-methyl-4-aryl-2,4,5,7-tetrahydropyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-6-ones is described, using an electrogenerated base of the anion of Meldrum’s acid. This one-pot, three-component condensation of an aromatic aldehyde, Meldrum’s acid, and 5-methylpyrazol-3-amine takes place in ethanol in an undivided cell in the presence of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate as an electrolyte under mild conditions. This protocol has the advantages of high yields, wide application, and employs an environmentally benign procedure.
