Abstract

Membrane potential, membrane current and conductance measurements have been carried out using a Millipore filter (pore diameter = 0.45 μm) impregnated with zirconium phosphate. Sodium chloride and magnesium chloride solutions of different concentrations were used in these studies. Non-equilibrium thermodynamic analysis of the results indicates possibilities of significant solute transport across the membrane when subjected to electrical potential difference, which has been found to conform with electrodriven separations obtained experimentally.
