Abstract

A new series of phthalate-based electrochromic materials were prepared and investigated. The introduced functional substituents on phthalate π-framework have a significant influence on the optical and electrochemical behaviors. Electrochromic devices of these phthalates exhibit a praiseworthy electrochromism, to be specific, with vivid colors, high optical contrast, fast response and excellent durability. To our surprise, one phthalate with the methoxyl substituent reveals an unanticipated photoluminescent nature, which renders the compound multifunction. In summary, outstanding electrochromic performances indicate that these phthalate derivatives are promising for applications in displays.
