Abstract

The hysteresis loop area A of the electric field-optical transmittance curve observed at varying field amplitude E and frequency ω was observed to show a scaling behaviour of A ∞ (E - EF)0.80 g (ω / (E - EF)0.20), where EF stands for the threshold field of the Freedericksz transition. Separate measurements at low frequencies led to the scaling behaviour as A ∞ (E - EF)0.64 ω0.78, which was found to agree with the asymptotic expansion of the above scaling function g(ω, E).
