Abstract

Sediment basins designed to capture increased amounts of sediment from earth disturbance sites will improveenvironmental quality. A practical, low-cost, solar-powered outflow control device was designed and built to be mountedon a modified Faircloth skimmer. The purpose of the device was to initiate and control the dewatering from a skimmerprincipal spillway by introducing an operator programmed delay-time between the inflow sediment laden hydrograph andthe start of basin outflow. When inflow to the basin began the device sensed the inflow and closed the outflow control valve. When inflow had stopped and a pre-set interval (or delay) of between 0 and 168 h had passed, the solid-state relay activateda gear motor that opened the outflow valve initiating basin outflow through the skimmer. The device was tested in a field-sizedsediment basin and effectively introduced the operator-prescribed delay-time between the basins inflow and outflowhydrographs.
