Abstract

We examined the electroluminescence issue from a detection of solar cells defects perspective. Different from previous research, this paper illustrates the differences in EL images of different types of defects. There are three parts in this paper. We start with a brief introduction of the principle of electroluminescence. Then we propose a classification of different defect types. An additional discussion of effects of different defects on the power of cells is also provided. We end the study with the conclusion EL cannot detect all the defects of the cells. We found in our research that the types of defects in the cells can be divided into two categories. Based on these findings, we can conclude that (1) Atomic level defect EL image display is not obvious. (2) Physical defects cells with the EL images have their own characteristics. (3) Only using EL to detect the quality of the cells is not reliable. Some useful implications from this study include that quality inspection method of solar cell.
