Abstract

Electrical safety efforts by utilities, government, and industry have resulted in significant reductions in the number of electrical injuries and fatalities in North America, Europe, and other developed areas. However, electrical accidents in developing countries continue to maim and kill people at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, accurate statistics for electrical injuries are lacking in most developing nations. Recent estimates by IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Senior Member Satish Chaparala (Hyderabad, India) have shown that approximately 22 people per day are electrocuted in India. Further research has suggested that similar large numbers of electrical injuries and fatalities are occurring in developing countries in Africa, South America, and Asia.
