Abstract

Brillouin scattering on SrTiO3 under a DC electric bias field E b (0 ≤E b ≤ 450 V/mm) was performed at T = 25.1 K and T = 28.0 K in order to investigate the origin of the doublet spectra in the quantum paraelectric (QPE) regime. An anomalous behavior of the integrated intensity of the doublet spectra was newly observed. The intensity has a minimum at E b = 260 V/mm (q // [001]), in the vicinity of the transition field from QPE state to induced ferroelectric state. No corresponding anomaly is observed when the scattering vector q is parallel to the [110] direction. These results are discussed in comparison with the second sound interpretation proposed by Hehlen et al., in relation to the ferroelectric soft mode.
