Abstract

When INEC, in collaboration with an UNDP-Managed Joint Donor Basket Fund (JDBF), convened the first National Forum in Abuja, August 2006, it drew participants from all the relevant stakeholders in the polity. The presence of politicians, academics, Non-governmental organizations, the Civil Society and Community Based Organizations gave the Commission the privilege of concluding that its actions reflected the wishes of the election stakeholders. The Second National Forum convened almost immediately after the compilation of the Electronic Voters’ Register and the verification of the credentials of candidates nominated by the political parties prior to the 2007 elections. However, since the 2007 General Elections, feedback from the meetings of Stakeholders held in states and local government areas across the country would seem to indicate that there is a continued misunderstanding of the rationale behind the establishment/formation of this very important tool in the history of the political process in Nigeria.
