Abstract

Abstract Elastic and thermoelastic constants of CsF and NH4I are measured by the improved Schaefer-Bergmann method. The elastic properties of both crystals agree well with the general elastic behaviour of the other alkali halides with rocksalt structure. The contributions to the elastic properties given by the cesium ions in cesium compounds seem slightly increased compared with isomorphous rubidium salts. Ammonium and potassium ions exhibit only smaller differences in this respect. Both cesium and ammonium compounds possess higher departures from the Cauchy relations than the corresponding potassium and rubidium compounds.
