Abstract
An elastic reverse‐time migration algorithm for VSP transmitted PS waves using a P‐ and S‐wave separated elastic wave equation(SEWE) is implemented and tested. Both the horizontal and vertical components of transmitted PS waves separated from VSP records are extrapolated backward in time simultaneously by making use of SEWE. The continuation produces two separated wave fields—one is of P‐wave and the other is of S‐wave. Only energies in the separated S‐wave field are mapped to generate the migrated images according to one‐way traveltime from shot point. This algorithm can suppress migration noises coming from P‐wave energies in backward extrapolated wave field obtained by conventional coupled elastic wave equation. We demonstrate the migration effects of the proposed algorithm by synthetic data from a Marmousi‐based elastic velocity model. For comparison, both the reverse‐time migration images from the conventional coupled elastic wave equation and acoustic wave equation are presented. We conclude that the presented algorithm provides better migration images.
