Abstract

The elastic scattering of the polarised thermal neutron has been calculated reducing the number of a priori hypotheses on the system being investigated. The authors use a general formulation that can be applied to ferromagnetically aligned systems and is particularly useful in the case of ferromagnetic alloys. The general formulation for the cross section has been employed to derive the incoherent neutron scattering cross section within the coherent potential approximation (CPA). It has been shown that the CPA predicts nonzero fluctuation of the magnetic moment of a given atom of a random alloy, so that the incoherent scattering of neutrons is not simply that due to a random arrangement of two magnetic moments.
