Abstract

The elastic modulus El of the crystalline regions in the direction parallel to the chain axis was measured for poly[3,3',4,4'-(dioxy biphenyl) diphenylene pyromellite imnide] (New-TPI) by x-ray diffraction. An El value of 55 GPa was obtained for New-TPI. This small El value was considered to be due to the coexistence of both ether bonds and mn-phenylene linkages which are introduced to improve the processability. The elastic moduli Et of the crystalline regions in the direction perpendicular to the chain axis were 3.2-3.5 GPa. These small E, values indicate that any special interaction hardly acts for New-TPI.
