Abstract

The elastic behaviour of pure cobalt is investigated in the vicinity of the spin-reorientation phase transition. Near each of the two transition temperatures Tl approximately=535 K and Tu approximately=595 K, a step-like change of the elastic constant c33 and a softening of c44 are observed. In a magnetic field applied parallel to the hexagonal axis, the lower transition (at Tl) is shifted to higher temperatures while the upper transition (at Tu) is suppressed. All these observations are in good agreement with calculations based on a thermodynamic theory.
