Abstract
A partir del siglo XVIII Chile experimento un cambio de gustos y de tendencias artisticas, bien testimoniado por el desarrollo del retrato de ostentacion como genero autono mo respecto del retrato de tematica religiosa. Se difundio en particular entre aquellas elites de intelectuales, eclesiasticos y politicos que querian manifestar su individualidad frente a la Monarquia Espanola, y que vieron en el retrato el vehiculo a traves del cual proclamar su emancipacion
