Abstract
This work tries to investigate about the first ideas and experiences which are connected to the term theology to show that the three contexts of origin (cultic, political and metaphysical) have determined its history. In the light of them all, the permanent mission of that activity is set out, which since it is open and new becomes a task. Then it states the conditions of possibility so that theology can exist as a specific knowledge, different from the other ones (revelation, faith, church, dogma) and shows the temptations which suffer from inside or threaten from outside. Finally, it puts forward the tensions, aporias and utopias which theology must contribute in its heart, and that accepted, conjugated, discerned and overcame are the root of its fruitfulness as well as of the perennial service which must render to the faith and the church. Theology can't exist without faith, nor faith without theology, nor church without any of them.
