Abstract

The results of the Documentary and Graphic Study accomplished in the Rivera del Gaidovar, in the municipalities of Grazalema (Cádiz) and Montecorto (Málaga) and by extension the data obtained with the works development in the headwaters of the Guadalete, are presented. This work is part of a larger project that extended to all sites of medieval chronology in the Sierra de Cádiz, although with occasional extension to Málaga for obvious geographical reasons, although in the malacitana area only the sites already known were visited. The results show a weak Andalusian presence in this area until the formation of the Granada Nasrid sultanate, when a population explosion occurred, most likely due to emigration caused by the push of the Christian kingdoms, particularly Castilla, for the sector in question. The settlement is characterized by an intense fortification of residence places and its connection with irrigated perimeters or works of hydraulic engineering that can be traced back, with the appropriate precautions, to medieval times.
