Abstract
Abstract In the following study we review some of the highlights of the translation in two stages (1550 and 1556), of Homer's Odyssey by Gonzalo Pérez, Secretary of State for Philip II of Spain and father of the famous Antonio Perez. We analyze the historical context that gave birth to the project, the Greek editions of the epic used in this translation, technical issues like the choice of meter, as well as the various editorial stages the text passed through before attaining it's final version in 1562. Special attention is given to the design of the Odyssey as a mirror for princes or specula principum.
