Abstract
This text aims to analyze the evolution during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries paradigms of the historical division between Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages and its impact on Spanish archeology. In a special will be described how and when the concept of late antiquity was introduced, replacing the previous paradigms. Also we try to analyze whether the continuity and process elements connected thereto affect the origins of al-Andalus, discussing the existence of an abrupt and sharp cut from the Arab and Berber invasion.

This text aims to analyze the evolution during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries paradigms of the historical division between Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages and its impact on Spanish archeology. La división arqueológica entre el fin del periodo romano y la alta Edad Media ha dependido tradicionalmente del relato y de las interpretaciones producidas desde las fuentes escritas. Para ello analizaremos primero como ha sido históricamente la división entre la antigüedad y alta Edad Media en nuestro país. Los instrumentos para este análisis serán por un lado los textos de las “historias de España”, y por otro el examen del desarrollo de los estudios universitarios y de la propia investigación arqueológica. En la última parte analizaremos específicamente el tema del proceso histórico entre el fin del mundo romano y el periodo omeya, primero a través de las investigaciones arqueológicas sobre. Y luego discutiendo el problema en términos generales, partiendo de la historia examinada con anterioridad
