Abstract

With the launch of the first man-made satellite, the question arose as to whether it was possible to allow state sovereignty to extend into outer space. The United Nations General Assembly established the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in 1959. Even though there is still no unified idea or criterion on the nature and content of Space Law, we can affirm that the 1967 Space Treaty has meant an extraordinary advance and that, by representing the unanimous will of all members of the international community in the United Nations organization, new figures and new principles of International Law have arisen, such as the acceptance of the idea of the “common heritage of humanity”, which has filled a legal vacuum regarding the use of certain spaces , especially outer space.
